Adventure Starts:
Sometimes you just need to get out. Pack the van, load the fly-fishing gear, and go. That was the plan for this one, a proper early evening fish, camp and eat at one of my favourite go to spots, Kingfisher Trout Lake in Herefordshire.
We've been coming here on and off for years on my own or with Davo. It's a decent drive from Birmingham through some lovely countryside, around an hour and twenty direct, but as always, I never go direct.
On the Way to Bromyard:
If I'm on the Royal Enfield, I always stop at Midwest Moto in Stourport-on-Severn for a browse and a coffee upstairs, but this time I was in the campervan, so I pushed on through.
By the time I hit Bromyard I was starving and needed breakfast. Found a nice little café just off the high street called Cosy Café and went for my standard full English, two quality sausages (and they were good, which matters more than anything else on a full English), two cured bacon, black pudding, hash brown, beans, tomato, local eggs and toast for £11.50 for breakfast and a flat white that did the job. Excellent breakfast, no complaints at all.
Legges Farm Shop, Bromyard:
Just down the road from the café is Legges Farm Shop, a fantastic place that sells pretty much everything you could want. Grass fed meats, handmade pies, cheeses, local veg, ciders, beers, and some brilliant pre-marinated BBQ stuff ready to go straight on the grill.
I picked up some of Legges homemade sausages for the morning and some lamb chops for dinner, and a few other bits. If you're passing through Bromyard, don't skip this place.
Guide to Kingfisher Trout Lake Bromyard:
Five to ten minutes down the road from the farm shop, then up a smaller lane on the left, and you're at Kingfisher Trout Lake Bromyard.
I checked in with Christine, who runs the place with her family , they all live on site. She's always really helpful, gives you the latest on which flies are working, where the fish are showing, all of that. Exactly what you want when you've just arrived and haven't got a clue what's happening on the water.

There is a great on site café selling hot food, drinks, and snacks (using those top-quality sausages from Legges!). Clean toilets are located just around the side of the building.
Gear Hire & Tuition:
If you are new to the sport, fly-fishing here is brilliant for beginners and less experienced anglers. You can rent fly-fishing gear and nets right on site, and professional tuition can easily be arranged if you want to brush up on your skills. I need to book a lesson!
The Set-Up:
The lake features solid casting platforms and nice little benches to sit on, relax, and have a bit of food.

Kingfisher Trout Lake Camping:
Once the van was set up for a bit of kingfisher trout lake camping, I chilled out for a bit had a beer or two before heading down to the water.
The campsite itself is back to basics but has everything you need for a self contained trip. There are water taps on site and proper waste disposal facilities, but keep in mind there are no electric hookups, so make sure your batteries are charged! Or get some solar Anker solar panels like me.
The views from the campervan looking down to the water are genuinely fantastic, so peaceful, lots of wildlife about, the kind of spot that reminds you why you bother getting out of the city.

Fly Fishing at Kingfisher Trout Lake:
Conditions were tough, properly hot, which made it hard going on the fly. No catch and release at this time of year either, for the well fair of the trout.
I fished for around four hours across various spots and only landed one fish, but honestly it didn't matter. I tried every fly from black buzzers to daddies, and even ran a washing line setup, but the trout were being incredibly stubborn in the heat. I eventually caught on the old faithful, a Blue Flash Damsel from Peaks Fly Fishing on a floating line.

I have fished here many times before with great success when it’s not so hot. It is a very well-stocked lake that is kept in pristine condition, but the summer sun just made them dive deep and not feed this time around. A late afternoon on the bank in surroundings like that is relaxing regardless of what's on the end of the line. A great session all the same.

Dinner on the BBQ:
After fishing it was time for a few cold beers, coals on, and get the food prepped. I cooked Lamb chops just how i like them crispy and pink the middle with lemon, garlic, herbs and olive oil. I didn't want to cook much, it was hot, i was sweating all over!

The Morning:
After a peaceful night's sleep, I fired the BBQ back up for the Legges sausages, i cooked to way to many, made a roll with caramelized onions and chilli sauce up before heading home. The perfect way to end a trip like this.
The Local Area: Pubs & Grub in Bromyard
If you don't fancy BBQing back at the campsite, or you're staying for a couple of nights, the local area has some good options for food and drink:
Pubs: There are plenty of good pubs around, but my absolute favourite is The Rose and Lion. It has a brilliant beer garden that’s perfect for a summer afternoon drink.
Indian Restaurants: There are two in town, and my go-to is Flavours (just remember to hit a cash machine first, as its cash only!).
Other Spots: You’ve also got a couple of Chinese takeaways, a proper fish and chip shop, local cafés, a steak restaurant called Foxys steak bar, ive heard its good, , and excellent local butchers and farm shops if you want to cook for yourself.
The Verdict: Kingfisher Trout Lake.
If you want an easy escape from Birmingham that combines fly fishing, great local food shops with quiet, lakeside camping, this corner of Herefordshire is hard to beat. Just make sure your food and booze stops are sorted before you pitch up.
